What recession? Triumph rakes it in

Sales up, profits up – it's all good news in Hinckley

by Visordown News

OTHER bike firms might be buckling under the pressure or focussing on more profitable markets during the financial crisis but Triumph is proving that you can still sell big bikes to buyers in developed countries even when money's tight.

While the global market for 500cc-plus bikes is down 50 percent on its pre-recession levels, Triumph's sales from June 2010 to June 2011 have actually increased 7 percent – and that's after the firm had already posted an increase the previous year. More than 48,000 bikes rolled off the Triumph production lines in Hinckley (and, ahem, Thailand) and profits rose from £15.1 million to £22.3 million. They say what goes around comes around, and after spending a fortune on Triumph during the early part of his 20-year ownership of the brand, John Bloor is finally starting to recoup some serious cash.

By managing to thrive in the toughest financial climate the motorcycle industry has ever endured, Triumph's position is getting ever stronger. During a period when many of its rivals are cutting back on their research budgets, Triumph claims to be increasing its R&D spend, which in turn means it has – and will have in the foreseeable future – new models when rival firms are making do with carry-over machines. As and when the economy starts to bounce back, that means the British firm should be in an enviable position.

Love it. It's great when British firms so well but even more so as a motorcycle lover and owner of a brand new Street Triple R. Well done Triumph. I hope you make it to No.1 in the World but you'll have to have a massive range and huge production facilities to rival makes like Honda. By the way, what happened to that job I applied for!

Great news... why isn't this news spread across the national media, a British firm doing bloody well... jesus we need some good news.

I purchase my first every Triumph this year, its build quality is top notch, it rides fantastic, has a great engine and its priced so competitively, its a bargain.

They have built a great brand backed up with really good dealers.

As long as they stick to their core values that got them here they will remain at the top, well gone triumph.

Sure, they're doing well because they make a good product these days. The name also helps, appeals a lot to the niche market.

I'm on my 6th Hinckley Triumph, all have been fabulous, the only models i'd not buy are the retro/custom twins as the finish on those is appalling, rust, poor lacquer on the casings etc, they look tatty quite quickly, sad as i'd love the Scrambler to go with my Speed Triple.

This is great news - who would have believed it 20 or even 15 years ago?

I've had 3 Hinkley Triumphs and they were all great bikes with top notch quality.

However the British public never gets to hear these positive stories - the only time I saw a the TV mention Triumph was when some geezer was complaining about wheel corrosion on his Bonnie - I suppose that's the story Britain wants to read "Our industry is finished and we make shoddy goods".

triumph - the one und only real motorcycle - tomorrow i'll marry my
thruxton - i swear!

After years of brilliant Hondas I bought a new Bonneville Scrambler in 2009 to sit alongside my Fireblade. After only a few weeks the wheels started to corrode and when I complained to Triumph they said I must have taken it out on salty roads (god forbid!)and drew my attention to the owners manual which stated the machine had to be washed, dried and protected every time it was used.
The locking fuel cap cost extra and means you have three keys (ignition, steering and cap)(four with the disc lock the insurers require me to use!) which is a pain, but what really irks me is the poor finish and the dismissive way Triumph treated me.
Buy British? Never again, I hate Triumph, I hope they go bust!

You're so right. Why the hell aren't the media all over this British success story?

I have a 2000 Triumph Sprint ST that I bought new. I've never had a single problem with it. Early on there were two very minor recalls on small parts and Triumph took care of it without a peep. Nothing on my bike is substandard. The bike looks great and the sound of that triple at full song is a thing of beauty. Bravo Triumph.
