Kevin Ash ... motorcycle journalist who died aged 53

VISORDOWN is sad to report the death of British motorcycle journalist Kevin Ash.

Kev lost his life in an accident during the press launch of the new 2013 BMW R1200GS in South Africa yesterday.

He had been The Daily Telegraph's motorcycling correspondent for 15 years, and was a high-profile and well-respected member of the motorcycling community, with columns published in many UK publications as well as in more than 15 countries. He also ran his own blog ashonbikes.com

Tony Gallagher, Editor of the Telegraph, said: 'Kevin Ash was the doyen of motorcycle correspondents. Respected throughout journalism and the motorcycle trade, he was also one of our most admired motoring columnists and will be greatly missed by both Telegraph staff and readers. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family at this difficult and sad time.'

BMW issued an official statement late last night, saying: 'It is with deep regret that BMW Motorrad confirms the fatal injury of Kevin Ash in a motorcycle accident during a launch event in South Africa. The accident happened to the north of a town called George, 250 kilometres east of Cape Town. Out of respect for Kevin's family and friends, no further information is being made available at this time.'

Our condolences go to Kevin's family.

Was always interesting to exchange with him on his website "Ash on bikes". The guy knew his stuff and lived for bikes. Sad to see one of the best (if not the best) motorcycle journalist go in such a tragic way.
R.I.P and condolences to his family and close friends.

How sad to hear this. I always enjoyed reading Kevins' column in MCN and would often be in total agreement with his views, which combined a common sense approach and a deep understanding of the workings of motorcycles together with his insights into bureaucracy.
I will greatly miss reading his articles.
Deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Really sad news, I didn't always agree with his opinions but I loved that motorcycling had someone so opinionated who was prepared to say what he felt and stand by it. Great loss for motorcycling, deepest sympathies to his family.

RIP to Kevin and condolences to his Family. He passed away doing what he loved most, surrounded by people that enjoyed him and respected him. The area that they were doing the tests in is also one of the most beautiful places in South Africa.

What a tragic shame. Kevin was outspoken but was always there to be counted. I can't imagine anyone capable of taking up the torch that he often carried for all things bike. RIP Big Man, condolences to all the hearts that Kevin reached out and touched.

Kevin had a knack at being able to make complicated mechanical principles sound straight forward and understandable. His explanations of how things worked helped my understandings greatly, such a shame to lose such a gifted person. I am sure we will all miss him and his work.
