Illinois bikers can run red lights. Kinda.

When you come to think of it, it's not a bad idea

A NEW law in Illinois declares that motorcycles and bicycles can run red lights, but only after waiting for a 'reasonable' amount of time.

The law was passed because motorcycles and push-bikes aren't heavy enough to trigger the traffic-light sensors and therefore can be left waiting until a heavier vehicle pulls up behind them.

The new law states:

“After stopping, the driver of a motorcycle or bicycle facing a steady red signal which fails to change to a green signal within a reasonable period of time because of a signal malfunction or because the signal has failed to detect the arrival of the motorcycle or bicycle due to the vehicle’s size or weight, shall have the right to proceed subject to the rules applicable after making a stop at a stop sign as required by section 11-1204 of this code.’’

The word 'reasonable' has been open to debate and the police enforcing the law say riders should wait for two minutes until they head through the red light.

Also a great idea for those annoyng late night, deserted traffic/pedestrian lights.
Can we have the turn left on red too please.

Great idea - shame that it's not possible on barrier controlled roads. Don't know whether it's light or weight sensor, but spent 5 mins. at 23:00 one night trying to get through the Dartford barriers - despite pressing the assistance button and on CCTV, still couldn't get through till a friendly 18-wheeler came along and assisted.

Could we please have a law which states we can saw the barrier off after a 'reasonable' period of time?

I've done it myself a few times when going to work on the night shift. The magnetic sensors in the road don't pick me up despite where I stop and I'm stuck at a red light until a car comes up behind me and at that time of night could be a long time...

As with others I've been sat at lights late at night, I've either given up and just gone or had to wait for something else to turn up.

How did they come up with a sensible law? Must be rookie lawmakers (and bless their hearts!).

Many's the night when I've waited through two red-green sequences, only to turn RIGHT on red, make a U-turn, and proceed.
