Classic bikers boxed out of Oxford

County council send parking enforcement officers out on Boxing Day, ending 45-year tradition

VINTAGE motorcycle owners who have been gathering in Oxford's centre on Boxing Day for the last 45 years have been forced out by the council's heavy-handed parking enforcement contract.

The Oxford branch of the Vintage Motorcycle Club (VMCC) have met every year on Boxing Day to show off their motorcycles to locals and tourists before heading out to a pub in the countryside for lunch.

However, the club now find it hard to meet in Oxford due to free bank holiday parking being replaced by parking charges enforced by Oxford council's draconian parking officials, NCP.

The club have been shuffled from their original meeting point to increasingly cramped parking area, then a loading-only bay and the final straw came in 2010 when a minibus containing 10 parking wardens turned up and circled the group.

Barry Whitehead, treasurer of the group and part of the Boxing Day meet for 10 years, said: “I regard us as being just the latest victim of the march of health and safety and commercialism.

“People love to come and see the bikes – it’s part of the city’s Christmas tradition. But I guess we don’t make money, so we are not important!”

>the final straw came in 2010 when a minibus containing 10 parking wardens turned up and circled the group.<

I'm just worried that only ten parking wardens, arriving in a minibus, is not enough to handle this obviously out of control group of the Oxford VMCC chapter of the Hells Angels free parking thugs. Maybe they should call in the PST (Parking SWAT Team) this year just in case a true parking rumble breaks out...

You just can not tolerate having a bunch of these toughs, parking up their bikes, for free, no less... and then standing around talking to folks that might be interested in the bikes... and having everyone enjoying themselves.... Nope... can't have it...

Forty five years of this wanton thumbing of noses to parking fees is just too much to tolerate!! You have got to maintain control and the flow of parking revenue... everyone knows that... Good on you Oxford NCP!!

NOT!! You bunch of twit scrooges!!

Have you ever considered that this type of activity actually draws in folks that will spend money in the shops and pubs... and the parking meters of Oxford?? This is called commerce... It is a GOOD thing... EVERYONE benefits in it, not just the Oxford NCP...

Sadly Oxford hates any kind of motorist, even though it has a huge Factory ( MINI ) giving employment they hate the motorist, which is why it's impossible to get anwhere using a powered vehicle.

Sit on the bikes outside the council office next Boxing day, stay astride the vehicle so you can't be ticketed, rev engine loudly. Then ride past the council leaders house, slowly, very slowly, come on now are you men or mice! Do not give in too these wankers the council hire to do their dirty work.

Protest and write to your MP and post it on places like this, can't believe it 45 years, they must have some rights.
Makes me sad to British sometimes, can you imagine this happening in Italy or Spain

I feel a protest coming on.

Just a small point but if its a pay and display parking its a bit dodgy, as their system ie tickets are designed for the use on a transparent surface from within an enclosed vehicle. They are not designed for unsecured external use & I would argue that any fine issued is a malicious prosecution as their system is not fit for purpose???
IE not for external use

Went to Oxford not long ago. Stayed for a while, shopped, eat, drank, paid parking fee and left.......£12 quid....Never again!!

Sounds like a case for a s-l-o-w ride en masse around the city centre whilst 'looking for somwhere suitable to park' ;-) Should snarl things up nicely...

nice bikes!

cant they just find a pub car park somewhere near? I bet a landlord would be happy to get load of visitors....

but yes the council sux! hate this kind of behaviour.....

I suggest you all Arrange a protest, set a time, and a meeting place for the start invite as many friends as possible to help make your point, Contact all the local media, Newspapers, radio stations and T.V. channels, let them know that your doing and why, make a peaceful protest about the councils heavy handedness, set off for for your boxing day Ride through and around the town PEACEFULLY don't annoy the general public by blocking there way etc, it may not get you back to your traditional meeting place, but if you do nothing you will achieve nothing. good luck to all who attend and a Merry Christmas

This is stupid typical Council idiots trying to make money from people. Meeting as you say in cramped parking areas surly is a BIGGER Health and Safety RISK in its self?

"the final straw came when a minibus containing 10 parking wardens turned up and circled the group."

Sounds like a scene from Robocop.
No wonder we love traffic wardens!

What a bunch of bell-ends, typical short-sighted beaurocrats. No wonder this country's going down the gurgler.

the speedfreak
Gone the way of Chelsea bridge i fear. Nothing like years and years of tradition getting wiped out over a few weeks by some posh people paying over the odds for shit flats then complaining about the bikes outside. Those were good times to be a burglar in London as ALL the police were on the bridge giving out zero tolerance 'safety advice' on white slips with £80 written on top. First time i turned up i thought there had been a major incident with all the pigs everywhere, then i realised that they were there to literally force us off the bridge.

Of course if we'd all parked up with pink ribbons on our leathers and said we were gay then we would have been left alone to cause as much mayhem as we wanted.........

As nutstrangler said, it's going down the gurgler.
