A MOTORCYCLIST IN China has remonstrated over local authority's confiscation of his motorcycle by setting himself on fire.

The man, believed to be called Tan Ruinian, allegedly poured petrol over himself before setting himself on fire outside the local police station on Wednesday afternoon, reports Xinhua news agency.

Police were able to extinguish the blaze and save Tan's life, although he now remains in intensive care at Chenzhou People's Hospital.

It's reported Tan's motorbike was confiscated after he was caught riding it without a driving licence and registration plate in a restricted area.
