WSB: Hopkins 'lucky' number turned down

MotoGP exile to race with '121' on his Stiggy Honda after organisers refuse request for lucky '21'

IT SOUNDS as though John Hopkins will not be able to run his usual number 21 on the Stiggy Honda in World Superbike this year after the organisers ruled on the idea.

The original number in the class had been occupied by multiple World Champion Troy Bayliss over the last few years and was retired by the WSB bosses when the dominating Aussie gave up motorcycle racing at the end of last season.

While the hype surrounding Hopkins' move from MotoGP to WSB has been building, there has apparently been some moves to get the number returned so that the American could run with his usual number on the front of the Stiffy bike.

The idea has now been shelved in honour of Bayliss and Hopkins is going to take to the races with 121 as his race number.

There must be some better number ideas out there than that for the likeable lad, what number do you think is most suitable for Hopkins to ride under in 2009?

Ducati Pete

I don't think he's above the top run of current superbike riders. He may well win races, but he won't have a easy time.

bigmart

The number 21 has hardly been lucky for him!

I would say any number but!

I dont think he will be running at the front either, much as I like the guy. Top 10 finishes IMHO

I think he will do very well. Like DP said, I don't think he will have an easy time, but I think he will suprise a few people. If he stays in it next year, I think he could win the Championship. He is a class act. He's not one of those riders that just laps fast on his own either, he can race hard too. I think he will be up the front from the off.

His # should be 0, which will = his # of wins, or 83 which will = the # of fairing sets he will go through

How long will the whole number retirement go on for? 7 is out, 21 is out; no doubt 46 will follow. Maybe Biaggi will retire 3....and in 10 years all the racers will have their mobile numbers on the front (or you could be 46b - though some bloke called Holmes has already bagged 221b )
