THE HISTORIC Weston super-mare beach race is in turmoil after the licence to race has not yet been granted to organizers Events 22.
The Weston Beach Race has been held at the same venue for the last three decades and brings in 2,000 competitors and over 100,000 spectators to the area.
RHL who have run the historic beach race for the last 28 years - and own all the rights - were forced to submit their proposal after North Somerset Council put the licence out to tender. RHL’s proposal was not successful and Events 22 won the bid to host the event.
However, the contract stipulated that the winning bidder must secure a licence by a recognized organisation affiliated with the Federation of International Motorcyclists (FIM) to race on the beach. For reasons unknown, the Auto Cycle Union who are affiliated with the FIM so far have not granted the licence to Events 22 which means they cannot hold the race on the beach.
North Somerset Council has now had to re-tender the event with the stipulation to have a licence from any regulatory motorcycle body. The closing date for the re-tender is 6th June.
Meanwhile, RHL have forged ahead with its new race venue in Swansea Bay to be held on the 7-9th October under the same Weston Beach Race name.
