Five-time motorcycle world champion helps F1 driver return from career-ending injury
SUNDAY'S FORMULA ONE German Grand Prix winner, Mark Webber, has said former motorcycle World Champion Mick Doohan was an instrumental force on the driver's road to recovery, after the Australian shattered his leg in a charity cycle ride seven months ago.
Webber was involved in a 50mph head-on collision with a 4x4, which left the young driver with a seriously shattered right leg. His injuries were so bad many in the F1 paddock believed Webber's career was over
On hearing the news of Webber's plight, five-time motorcycle world champ Doohan kept in daily contact with his fellow countryman, offering words of support over the months to follow.
Doohan seriously injured his left leg in 1992 during the Dutch TT. His injury was so severe doctors contemplated amputating the injured leg.
Webber's father, Alan, said: "Mick has probably broken more bones than anyone alive and he was so much help to Mark when times were tough. He told him what to expect of the recovery."
