"It is true to say that we are facing a potential major overspend" says Minister for Tourism
THE DEATH of a competitor and two spectators in the 2007 TT has been blamed for a near £700,000 overspend made by the Manx Department of Tourism.
Racer Marc Ramsbotham and spectators Dean Jacob and Gregory John Kenzig, died following an accident at the 26th Milestone on Senior Race Day in 2007.
Martyn Quayle, Minister for the Department of Tourism and Leisure said the estimated overspend was 'directly due to extra expenditure arising in respect of extra costs as a result of the coroner's verdict following the tragic accidents of the centenary TT'.
"It is not unusual to have some sort of overspend each year as sometimes it is not possible to be precise about some costs," said Mr Quayle. "It is true to say that we are facing a potential major overspend as a result of unavoidable additional expenditure on our major motorsport events and unanticipated rises in the cost of fuel."
Mr Quayle contined: 'The money had not been authorised by the department but had been spent as a matter of urgency to allow the races to continue.'
After the tragic incident, TT race officials and marshals came under fire from Coroner Michael Moyle, who urged for better safety precautions to be put in place.
