Southern 100: Victory for Martin

Lincolnshire ace wins and sets lap record at Billown Circuit

AFTER A less than successful TT a month ago, Hydrex Bike Animal Honda rider Guy Martin returned to the Isle of Man with a vengeance as he contested the Southern 100 on the Billown Circuit near Castletown.

Aboard the Shaun Muir Racing 1000cc Honda Fireblade, the 26 year old from Kirmington in Lincolnshire set fastest time in practice around the 4.25 mile circuit and in Tuesday's opening race, he romped to victory ahead of Ryan Farquhar and Ian Lougher to take the Solo Founders Race, setting a new lap record in the process.

Any hopes of further success were dashed by the weather on Wednesday which washed out the schedule and then in today's Solo Championship race, Martin's Manx luck was again in evidence when he retired out of second place with a front puncture on lap two.

"It's been mint and I've really enjoyed the week, it's been good to get back to basics. I'm delighted with a win and a new lap record but today didn't go quite to plan. This has turned my season round and I'm feeling so chilled out, in fact I'm going for a beer with six lads who have just turned up wearing stick-on sideburns. Absolutely fantastic!" said Guy.

Team Owner Shaun Muir said: "The deal with Guy for this week was he went off and did his own stuff on our bikes and I'm really pleased he got the win after the disappointment of the TT. Who knows, it maybe will turn his season round as it's a win on the Isle of Man which he has been striving for so hard this season!"

Guy will be in action on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed before returning to BSB action the following weekend at Oulton Park.
