ROBERT Dunlop has died from severe chest injuries following a crash in Thursday's practice session at the North West 200.

The crash happened in the 250cc qualifying at the Mathers Cross Section of the course and involved another rider, Northern Irishman Darren Burns, who has suffered a broken leg and concussion.

It's thought the riders were approaching 160mph as the accident took place. Witnesses say that the rear wheel on Dunlop's bike appeared to stop, throwing him from the bike. Dunlop was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after 2200 BST.

Robert Dunlop's brother, Joey, died in a racing accident in Estonia in 2000.

Oh no, i don't believe this, how terribly sad.

I had the great honour of racing against Robert and other members of the Dunlop family when they used to make their one a year trip to the Anglesey Grand meeting a few years back when i was just your average clubman.

Don't think i can find words to express at this moment in time, only to say RIP and condolences to family

Absolutely gutted.
