STEVE PLATER, one of the favourites for the title in this year's Fuchs Silkolene British Supersport championship, thinks that Aussie rider Billy McConnell will be fast and consistent in this year's British Supersport championship - and could be serious contender for the title.
Plater, who came into the British Supersport Championship halfway through last season and immediately found his way to the podium, said: "Billy is a quick rider, there's no getting away from it and he's not the sort to throw it away int he gravel traps either. When he doesn't think he can win he'll take a good load of points and put together a strong season. He will be one of the main players in the championship this year for sure."
McConnell has just finishes a shakedown test in Cartagena, Spain with the MAP Raceways Yamaha. McConnell said: "It was a good shake-down with the team and it was also good for bonding with my new colleagues. MAP Raceways already had a good set-up from last year so we just had some changes to the electronics and the motor. We got down to some creditable lap times and it was a very positive test.
"I concentrated on getting a setup and working with my tyres plus I had to remember how to race a 600cc after being on a Superbike for a season. It's great to be starting the season injury-free and with some testing under my belt. I'd like to give the championship a run for its money but there is a lot of competition. I know I'll be trying hard for sure."
