Promising young rider dies on his debut after a serious incident at Mather’s Cross

NORTHERN Ireland’s road racing community is in mourning after the death of a young Cookstown rider who was competing in his debut North West 200 race.
Mark Young, 23, suffered fatal injuries in the high-speed crash during the opening race on Saturday at the notorious Mather’s Cross, the same section of the course where the experienced road racer Robert Dunlop died last year.
Young sustained serious leg and chest injuries and was taken to the Causeway Hospital. He was then transferred to the intensive care unit of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast but he did not recover and died in hospital on Sunday morning.
