Following a meeting of the Isle of Man Government’s TT co-ordinating committee on Friday 11 April, TT spokesman Simon Crellin says there will be no major increase in the number or size of areas prohibited to spectators during TT 2008.
‘There will be one or two changes but it’s not going to be dramatic,’ says Crellin. ‘We want to make sure people are able to enjoy the races but at the same time we have a duty of care to them. And everybody in a position of responsibility will understand what they need to do to enforce the restrictions.’
However, spectators will be in ‘no doubt’ as to which areas on the course are banned. Each prohibited area will now be clearly indicated with signage and on-site maps showing the boundaries.
Agreements with landowners for each site are currently being concluded and a full list of prohibited areas is expected to be published shortly.
This reappraisal of procedures is a reaction to Isle of Man Coroner Michael Moyle’s outspoken attack on TT organisation in his inquest verdict on the deaths of a competitor and two spectators at the 26th Milestone during the Senior TT last year.
Moyle heard evidence that the spectators were standing in an official prohibited area but there were no warning signs and rampant confusion over who was responsible for ensuring such signs were in place.
