Police operation uncovers doping ring in Andorra involving 60 professional athletes
POLICE in Andorra have uncovered a doping ring that lists a motorcycle racer amongst its clientele.
The doping ring was cracked by a joint operation between Mossos, Civil Guard and Police, which sees an involvement of 60 professional athletes. The majority of the clients of the internet pharmacy based in Encamp were cyclists.
In a sting that saw investigators track 536 sales of performance enhancing products has been taking place over the past year, however police believe the pharmacy has been operating over the past six years.
The drugs sold include the blood booster Erythropoeitin (EPO), steroids and other banned substances. To order the drugs, athletes would purchase through a section on the website, the next step would see the products smuggled into Spain or through an additional distribution point in Jaca, where drugs would come directly from European laboratories.
To catch the doping pharmacy police limited their surveillance to the transactions of those involved in performance enhancing drugs, the chief investigator believed they would have uncovered a greater number of clients if the observation was widened.
A man and his wife have been identified as running the pharmacy, as well as three others who operated a Barcelona store, will face sentences of 6 months to two years in prison for drug trafficking.
The motorcyclist remains unnamed but a host of cyclists including Ángel Gómez Gómez, Enrique Mata Cabello, Adolfo Garcia Quesada and Vicente Ballester Martínez amongst others, were named in the report.
