Casey Stoner...on pole at Assen

CASEY STONER has taken pole position for the weekend's Dutch GP, after a frenzied qualifying session at Assen.

The reigning world champion stuck in a best lap of 1:35.520, which gave the young Australian the outright lap record.

Spain's Dani Pedrosa clinched second spot on the grid in the dying moments of the session, relegating championship leader, Valentino Rossi, to third.

The session ended on a bad note after John Hopkins crashed his Kawasaki at immensely high speed, colliding with the circuit's air fencing. We'll keep you posted on his condition
