MotoGP: Our strategy was right says Rossi

MotoGP champ insists the team made the right choices, despite his 16th place finish

VALENTINO Rossi has said that his early switch to dry tyres in the French Grand Prix would have paid dividends had he not crashed on his first lap out.

Despite the drying track, Rossi crashed on his opening lap out, while his team mate Jorge Lorenzo decided to stay with his fast-shredding wets and pit in only when the track was almost completely dry.

Rossi said: "I had difficulties from the start today and I really could not ride my bike to its best. Already by the fourth lap I felt that I was quite slow and that I couldn’t ride as I wanted. I decided to change bikes early because usually this strategy – being among the first to change the bike – pays off.

"Of course I knew that I had to warm the tyres up a little bit but I crashed anyway in that corner because at that point the track was still wet and I just didn’t ride into it in a calm enough manner. Luckily I was able to make it back to the pits and I changed again, but the rule says that if you change the bike again then you have to use one wet tyre, and so this is what we did.

"When I started that time, the pit-limiter on my bike was not on and so I was given a ride-through for speeding, but by that time it was too late for our race anyway. We’ve had problems throughout the entire weekend with the set-up of the bike and today I was just hoping that I could stay with the riders in front and get some important points for the championship. Now we go to Mugello, my home GP, where I will perhaps be even more motivated than usual!"

Rossi admitted that his gambling strategy didn't pay off but he made his choice becuase Lorenzo and Dovizioso were pulling away, while Melandri was catching up. In Motegi in 2007, Loris Capirossi made a similar decision and went on to win the race.

Rossi said he carried on with a view to getting a point should anyone else crash out and he also wanted to vent his frustration with his crash and see out the race.

couldn't believe the Eurosport commentator didn't understand the tyre rules when changing bikes. I like James Haydon but he should have known too; especially if he wants to make it as a pundit but the muppet they had standing in for Moody and Ryder definitely should have known better.

Yup,

"it looks like Rossi's team haven't had time to change the tyre" FFS!

Who sanctioned Toby & Julian's day off?

and as for Rossi's comments - the strategy wasn't right, he came last, nil point....... if he had stayed out on wets he might not have crashed, Melandri changed lap after Rossi finished second, Lorenzo stayed out forever and finished 1st.... need I say more? If Rossi is going to take early gamble's like that he's got to ride better in those conditions.

Hudson

I think he shoud have said..... we thought our decision at the time was right but given the result (coming last) it clearly was not.

That is a little more honest.

Always lots of mights in racing. Jeremy Burgess said post-race that he still thinks Rossi came in at the right time as his lap times were starting to rise. Afterall, Pedrosa came in at same time and bagged 3rd.

Lorenzo played it best; but if Rossi hadn't binned it, who's to say how the rest of the race would've gone?

The only reason I watch the Eurosport coverage is becasue of Jools and Moody. I was shouting at the screens at the morons when they didnt understan the tyre rule. Even my wife knew the score.

Might be time to start watching LIVE BBC coverage after all?

Even with a lack of understanding of the tyre rule they are still better to listen too than the BBC coverage. ( suzzie excluded of course)

Blue Edge

The pair of wasters we all love (Toby and Jules) are a very hard act to follow, they have a wealth of knowledge between them.

So no matter who we get we're gonna be hissing and shouting at the telly methinks.

But J Hayden especially gets on my goat a lot; he seems to say things for the sake of talking when sometimes he should just...... shut the *&^$ up !

Pair that with a guy who would be better off commentating on a knitting contest and that's what we're left with.

Between them they could've at least sourced a rule book and check afore openning thier mouths?

And as for commentators calling J Lorenzo 'Georgay' or 'Jeorgay' or any other stupid mis-name.......fu*&ing ask they guy what his name is!!!!!!!!!!!

*sigh*

I watch the racing on Sky Sports here in NZ and teh commentry is great. Thought I was going to miss Toby & Jooles when I moved here but looks like I'm missing nothing!

The season so far has been great and Rossie crashing AND getting a ride through and Melandri doing so well made for a top race this weekend. I hope the rest of the season continues like this.
