MotoGP: New racetrack planned for Australian GP

Floodlit 4.1-mile Gold Coast circuit planned as the venue for Australia's first MotoGP night race

AUSTRALIA'S MOTOGP could potentially be held on the country's Gold Coast after plans for a £300 million motorsport complex were unveiled yesterday.

Plans are underway to build a 4.1-mile race track, complete with international hotel and car and motorcycle museum. The complex will also have the most modern communications technology available.

And after the success of Qatar's MotoGP night race the new Australian facility has plans to install floodlights too.

The project, which has been eight years in the planning and is expected to complete in 2011, has been endorsed by former motorcycle world champion Mick Doohan:

"It's a fairly bold area these guys have stepped into, but all in all I say it's got quite a bit of merit," he said.

When asked if he thought a MotoGP World Championship race could be held at the Coast precinct, he replied: "It would be great, I'd obviously love to see it up here.

"I think we'll go one step at a time. We've got the circuit in place; you never know what will happen down the track.

"From what I can see the facility will be one of the best in the world."

First they will need to pry it from Philip island ,and that ain't going to happen without a fight. Like taking the IOM TT and trying to run it on the UK mainland. I don't think so !

Yeah, Philip Island fucking rules. Easily one of the best circuits out there.

Plus, Melbourne seems to have more riders than any other major city in Oz; at least that's what i thought when travelling. The Gold Coast already has the Indy anyway.

After watching the very first Oz GP in 89 on video, i vowed it was a place i'd love to watch a race at, anyway nearly 20 years after making that promise and still no nearer to it...nevermind.

But it would have to be something special to out do the Island.

Seems like every other week over here there's news of a.n.other new circuit being planned. Meanwhile, the other news is that places like Oran park are getting turned into housing estates.

Last I heard about PI was to develop PI. A moto-x circuit, three and five star hotels, golf courses, cart track etc.

I keep hearing that FG sport are talking at length to Eastern Creek, maybe a move coming up? Who knows, i'm also hearing about a new NZ circuit. Better pack wets then...
