Jorge Lorenzo to replace Dani Pedrosa at Repsol Honda from 2010? This was the hot rumour at Jerez, and the Japanese GP winner and World Championship leader was not troubling too much to deny it.

“I had a meeting with Lin Jarvis” (Yamaha race company chief) “yesterday, and we discussed the future,” he told the post-qualifying Press conference.

“I think that now I am in a good place, and my first idea is to continue with Yamaha. But after you have good results, then other people want you, so …”

Sources close to Lorenzo said that he had not yet spoken with any other team, but it is also known that Repsol is anxious to sign up the new bright boy of Spanish racing. Pedrosa’s (and Honda’s) results have fallen short of their hopes, and the Spanish petroleum company is thought to be losing patience.

Pedrosa was at the same conference, having qualified a shade slower than pole man Lorenzo, and was asked the same question. “I have been a long time with Honda,” he said. “But there are other bikes that are fast. That’s all,” the taciturn rider said.

Much will depend on results of the forthcoming season, but Lorenzo’s current position puts him in an extremely strong position to start a bidding war between Honda and Yamaha.
