MotoGP: Burgess blasts 990cc return

'If we still had 990s, they would be going even faster than the 800s' says spanner-wielding guru

VALENTINO ROSSI'S famous crew chief Jeremy Burgess has pooh-poohed rider’s suggestions of going back to 990cc MotoGP bikes to improve safety.

The switch to 800s has been blamed for higher corner speeds which have reduced safety, and led to the special riders’ meeting with Dorna at Brno; and a chorus from the riders requested a return to the torquier 990s. But the increases in corner speed – on bikes with the same minimum weight – were as much down to tyre advances and electronic refinements, agreed Burgess.

“With the same development, the 990s would be even faster,” he said.

The greater increase had come in corner entry speed, he said, and in that the less torquey 800s allowed the riders to open the throttle earlier on corner exit. “Actual corner apex speed is only two or three km/h faster,” he said.

“If we still had 990s, they would be going even faster than the 800s.”

yeah let them have 990`s again but take away some of the electronics so its the rider that controls how much power goes to the rear not the computer

I agree in the fact the electronics should be removed - but I guess you could argue that would reduce rider safety.

We all want the riders to be safe (even though this is motorsport), but what we want is for the good riders to shine, and those poor riders to lag at the back.

Wasn't it Honda who pushed for the 800cc bikes, thinking they would clean up in MotoGP? Under the guise of rider safety of course.

And why the dig at Stoner? He's obviously a good rider. Look at where his team mate keeps finishing!!

Will be good to see haydenon the Ducati next year......both riders will be fighting for the title I hope It will defo make the series more interesting for 2009, in my opinion. I guess time will tell.

Well if he's such a good rider why is he getting beat by someone on a slower bike?I'd like to see how good he would be aswell without traction control.Haydenon?

I hope he can make it all work on the Ducati, otherwise it will be Kawasaki or wait for Louis to call it a day at Suzuki The Vermin is probably signed for Suzuki by now.
