TT legends set to miss next year's North West after race officials rule out date change
TOP ROAD racing stars John McGuinness and Keith Amor are set to miss out on next year's North West 200 race, due to a date clash with the World Endurance Championship in Qatar.
The duo, along with former NW200 winner Steve Plater, make up the newly-formed Honda TT legends race team, announced earlier this weekend at the NEC Motorcycle Live Show. Plater will not take part in the North West, having announced he is quitting road racing earlier this week.
However, despite calls from the Honda squad for the North West to be rescheduled, NW 200 race chief Mervyn Whyte has said the May 21 date will still stand.
“It would cause chaos to change the date,” Whyte told the Belfast Telegraph. “Many thousands of people would be affected.
“We are not just talking about Race Day, but a whole week of events, including two practices, one of which, the daytime practice, was only secured after long and delicate negotiations.
“We're grateful to the many residents, businesses and schools on the course for their co-operation and could not go back to them now to start talking about new dates. Many local events have also been arranged around the May 21 date."
