SUPERBIKE RIDER Steve Mercer will make his debut in the Isle of Man TT next year.

Reports in the Kent News say that the 27-year-old, from Maidstone, has decided to take on The Island circuit after visiting the Manx Grand Prix earlier this year.

Mercer said: “Paul Phillips from the Isle of Man tourist board got a collection of riders including myself to visit and after seeing the first bike go down Bray Hill at 160mph, I knew I wanted some of that.”

The former MRO Superstock champion and British Superbike rider never considered road racing until the visit and is now prepared to launch a three year challenge to become TT champion.

He said: “I am going to treat it as a three year apprenticeship. The first year will be learning the circuit and the second year will be trying to improve, but the third year I aim to finish on the podium or even win it."
