The Texas Tornado pipped current MotoGP world champion, Casey Stoner, by over half a second, with a 1:29.566 best.
Honda-mounted Alex de Angelis and Andrea Dovizioso put in sprkling performances, ending the day third and fourth respectively.
Britain's James Toseland couldn't quite match the pace of his Yamaha teammate, but still managed to notch up a time of 1:30.864.
