The 2012 Dakar will start from the Argentinian seaside resort of Mar de Plata on 1 January and finish in the Peruvian capital of Lima on 15 January.
The altered route will test competitors over more sand and dunes than last year, perhaps reminding seasoned riders and drivers of Mauritanian stages from the previous African based rally.
