BMW S1000RR in 1000km endurance test this weekend

Jurgen Fuchs impressed with BMW's new superbike after 203 test laps

FORMER 250GP rider Jurgen Fuchs is taking the BMW S1000RR Superbike for its first endurance race this weekend as part of a series of 1000km races in Germany.

The meetings mark the first time the all-new BMW has taken part in the endurance racing scene. The bike will be ridden in the Team Motobike squad in the senior class which includes bikes up to 1200cc (so, the Ducatis are in there too).

Fuchs has already managed 203 laps of testing with the bike and the former double IDM Superbike champion says the bike is a weapon. He said: "At first, I was a little sceptical about the whole project. We got the bike just 14 days ago, took it out of the crate and started testing.

"We ran the HP2 sport in this class in 2008 so we had a benchmark to compare to and right away the bike was very good! But this is a brand new motorcycle with a completely different engine concept and we now have new people working on it too. But I am already convinced that this will be a motorcycle that will challenge for the championship. It is that good."

Racers are having major problems with the gearbox in the new BMW. On the BSB Forum ( www.bsbforum.co.uk) riders are complaining of gearbox failure after one race meeting and BMW Aftersales boss Tom Nichol is giving the riders the cold shoulder. It is rumoured riders who are being supported by BMW have had similar problems but have been told to keep quiet. Lets hope BMW sort this quick before a gearbox fails on the road and kills a rider. The bike has so much potential it would be a shame to see it marred by what could be a minor issue to fix. BMW do the right thing and get it sorted.
