Zero to launch electric sportsbike

Lightweight, 31bhp, sportster to hit British shores in 2010

ZERO Motorcycles are currently preparing an electric sportsbike based on the Zero S Supermoto, which should hit UK showrooms sometime next year.

Targeted at the 125cc sports category, the Zero SS is set to make around 31bhp from a 4kWh battery.

Founder, Neil Saiki commented: “In the UK there are these 125cc motorcycles and we wanted to do the same thing in an electric version. Full fairing, make it aerodynamic, make it racy looking. But we're always going to highlight the frame technology because we have all that beautiful aluminum."

"That should be a real popular motorcycle, probably our most popular motorcycle." added Neil.

Zero plans to sell 600 total supermotos this year; the SS will exceed that figure in 2010.

"Expect the Zero SS to make the same power as the S: 31bhp and 62.5lb/ft of torque."

"It'd also be reasonable to assume a weight close to the supermoto's 225lbs (102kg). The minimum weight for a 250GP bike is 100kg (220lbs). "

Blimey.. That's an intriguing combination of figures.

Could be a lot of fun.

'Up to 60 miles'..

I went and had a look at their site out of curiosity. http://www.zeromotorcycles.com/

They've got quite an interesting electric trailbike too (in light of that 'bike spooks horse' thread) but again, the range is the killer.

Up to 60 miles? I'm guessing that doesn't involve too much accelerating, braking, hills or high speed.

Max power is 31bhp which is ~ 23KW. And the battery is 4KWh, implying you can use all 31bhp (maybe scraping 100mph?) for 10 minutes.

Still - they're getting better all the time .

Given the low weight, and poor range - are we likely to see re-adoption of the "maintain high corner speed at all costs" tactics employed on 2-stroke 250s? Sure it's no fun without the sound and smell?
