The future of one of Britain’s best-loved racetracks is in jeopardy. With large parts of the original tarmac now dug up the historic 2.5 mile Grand Prix track is in limbo pending a decision by owners Donington Ventures Ltd. Donington Park has been the subject of rumour and intrigue for several months now. The turmoil started when Donington Ventures Ltd embarked on an ambitious redevelopment programme to bring the track up to spec for the 2010 Formula 1 season. The group then failed to get sufficient funding in place to meet a deadline imposed by F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone.
Among those waiting for news on the circuit’s future is the long-established Honda Ron Haslam Race School. Director Anne Haslam said, ‘We were happy to lose ten percent of our income when we cancelled some track days to allow the circuit alterations and improvements to take place.’
'We’ve enjoyed a relationship with Donington for nearly three decades and what Donington Ventures have done in an incredibly short period has impressed us. I don’t know what’s going on at the moment but we have to make provisions for our business, our partners and our customers.
We have time as a consideration and need to plan ahead. We will go to Silverstone if it all goes wrong here. We really hope it doesn’t, we love it here, but we have a business to run. We will have to make that decision no later than January.’
