Volvos voted most hated car by British bikers

Bennetts survey shows Swedish manufacturer still rates as the most disliked by UK motorcyclists

Visordown Motorcycle News

VOLVOS HAVE been voted the most hated car on the road in a survey of British motorcyclists.

The Swedish car manufacturer topped the Bennetts poll with almost a third (28%) of UK bikers dreading an encounter with a Volvo.

The survey released today by Bennetts reveals the perception of the slow and considerate Volvo driver has vanished. With newer models such as the large V70 and the popular S80, it seems Volvo drivers are becoming increasingly unaware of bikers on Britain’s roads.

The research, compiled from bikers up and down the country, put Volvo on the top spot, but BMW wasn’t far behind with 27% of bikers considering them the most dangerous cars on the road.

Unsurprisingly, next on the hit list of most hated cars on the road was Porsche with 16% of the overall vote. Although normally the same height as a bike, the Cayenne 4x4 monster may explain why the German car giant is third in the poll. Land Rover (13%) and Mercedes (6%) make up the rest of the top five, proving that if you have a large vehicle, it pays to look out for bikers on the roads.

Top 10 most hated cars on Britain’s roads

Volvo 28%
BMW 27%
Porsche 16%
Land Rover 13%
Mercedes 6%
Ford 3%
Jaguar 2%
Volkswagen 2%
Nissan 2%
Mini 1%

I'm a biker and I drive a Volvo (!). Analyze that!

Having a laugh... Volvo is almost unnoticable... Worst are Porsche Cayene 4x4's (usually women on the phone or putting on lipstick), and mercedes (All types).

Best are taxi's, White van men and BMW's are OK...

What is the purpose of this survey exactly?

Why didnt they look at actual accident statistics and see if there was any trends, it would be far more meaningful rather than a lame PR stunt to get media coverage.

Actually, what we really need is a complete demographic profile of the highest risk driver....

34 y/o single female living in London W6
36"/28"/32"
Blonde with red nail varnish
Driving 07 white BMW 328 convertible
In PR/Marketing

Anyone matching this profile should be forced to attach a red ballons to their bumpers to warn all motorcylists of pending hazzard.

Andy

ps: Anyone got her phone number?

I ride a CBR1000RR and a GSXR750. One of the best cars I've ever had though was a Volvo T5 Estate. Awesome device.

Most victims of sorry mate I didn't see you could probably have helped themselves by being more observant , particularly near crossroads, T Junctions etc.

Gnerally, I find BMW drivers worse than Volvo drivers and Cheslea Tractors are worst of all.

Well, in my view that is...

dayt0na_955i
BMWs worst, followed by mums on the run, followed by over 70s.  Chav wagons are a pain too - the sort that are worth £5 with a £2000 stereo and 29 inch wheels fitted.

a volvo was the cause of my big off many moons ago. i don't blame the car,...just the penis who was driving it.

i find young executive types in company 3 series BMW's the most likey to try and take liberties

Watch for the new Mondeo. Just got new company one and A pillar vision is absolutely atrocious. If passenger has sun visor down, Left hand view at junctions is non existent. At 20 yds blind spot is a good 10 yds wide.

IMO when manufacturers are introducing a new model it should get 'Think Bike' checked to make sure that kind of nonsense doesn't happen.

sorry guys,beemers for me,never had a problem with volvo's....

Posted: 14/10/2008 at 13:47

apjones

you know where you are with a Volvo - treat with caution

beemers think they can go faster than you

Mercedes drivers might not be quick , but they do think they own the road and will ALWAYS pull out infront of you if you're filtering through traffic

Posted: 14/10/2008 at 14:07

AC

The problem with Mercedes drivers is that they all think their car is an S Class and takes up a whole lane.  They rarely keep to the centre or right hand side of the lane when you're trying to filter.

Posted: 14/10/2008 at 14:12

apjones

When riding in London recently slowly filtering thro traffic, in five seperate instances cars saw me in their mirrors and they actively pulled over to block my way, they were all Mercedes.

One was even on the fast lane (but stationary) of the M25

Noticibly some white vans (surprisingly) jaguars and a Roller  moved over to make more room .

I suspect the Roller was worried about his paintwork

I used to think BMW's were the worst but I can now quite happily say that Bently drivers are the most deserving of the title prick. volvos? hardly notice them really

yeah, put a good driver in an M3 in the twisties and he'll be quicker than a bike.

Although, a good biker will be faster than an average driver in the twisties.

I would say that someone on a bike will have more chance of being a better driver (rider) than someone in a car though. As more bikers than cagers do trackdays, more training etc.

I think the car driving world would be horrified to learn of our opinions of them

The all time worst drivers are BMW drivers, they sit right up your arse or won't move out of the BMW lane (lane 3) of the motorway!
Mercedes drivers are slightly better, generally driven by older people.
Audi drivers have started to become a pain, especially kids in old A3's who don't look any further than the stereo!
Once you get within the M25 that all changes, every fucker is out to get you!!!

have a virtual handshake, couldn't agree more. although bikers do the same and when you flash them to let them know you are behind they just accelerate and then you catch them up 0ne mile later and they are still in the pissing way

and breath..........

Did the Volvo come out top as most hated as most of the Volvos around our way are covered in blue and yellow flourescent stickers and have blue lights on the top!  Closely then followed by the same colour scheme for BM's.

There's a hidden message in this survey......

Yep, thats true too, and there's vid somewhere on You Tube showing it, dont remember the bike the guys on though. He (guy on bike) doesnt get the pi55 took out of him though, as most of the time he's right up the rs of the BM.

My mate has an Evo 6 and Iv'e allready said to him that there's no way I'd race him on twisties. But I fully aggree with you too as regards to most bikers being better drivers than most ordinary drivers. As being on the bike DOES make you alot more alert than drivers that dont have/had bikes.

Btw...I see your here too as well as UKBF..

Yep same here, own a Volvo. And again agree that it's the dickhead behind the wheel that's the problem not the make of car. We need the second sight and have the force running strong in us to keep from going under the wheels.

3 series BMWs because they're always angry about not getting a 5 series on their leasecar list, and 5 series drivers, because they're always angry about not getting a 6/7series on their leasecar list.

COYI

Chelsea tractors (normally disco 3's), tinted windows - most dangerous cars in London, normally driven by some young go getter bloke with a massive tie knot!

Big vans / big lorries - mostly gents the lot of them imo, usually give you space, time and let you by with ease...

I don't mind volvo's - as soon as I see one I expect the worst and am ready to avoid them. Strangely, in other countries Volvo drivers are fine! So must be something about British drivers thinking they are behind the wheel of a tank...
