Transport for London test GPS speed restrictors

TfL's latest venture brings a whole new meaning to 'Big Brother'

TRANSPORT FOR LONDON (TfL) are to test a new type of speed restriction software on 20 of the organisation's vehicles - including a bus, reports BBC News.

TfL are hoping the new GPS-controlled 'Intelligent Speed Adaptation' device will reduce the number of accidents and speeding tickets, by ensuring the driver of any vehicle fitted with the device cannot exceed the posted speed limit.

Using GPS, the system can recognise the speed limit on any road in the UK to ensure drivers don't exceed the limit by restricting the vehicle's engine management system.

Is this the start of something very sinister? Let's hope not.

So you try to accelerate out the way of the guy that hasn't seen you, only to be capped at the road's speed limit by this wonderfull new gadget, meaning the possibly avoidable impact is now inevitable.... With absolutely no sarcasm or irony whatsoever, what a marvelous idea?!

Hang on -- restriction down to speed limits? This is London we're talking about

But seriously, I'm as much concerned about the potential mission drift into covert surveillance/route data mining for commercial gain as I am about not being able to accelerate out of harm's way.

And -- while not exactly in the same league (on visibility grounds) -- there were the same objections raised to restriction being fitted to lorries, coaches, etc., without a dramatic increase in incidents (as far as I am aware).

Ultimately, though, whatever happened to taking personal responsibility for safety? This sort of thing will simply remove one more piece of intelligence from us, and give us one more thing to blame for our mistakes.

If it’s a speed problem with the bus drivers in London…perhaps they should send them to rehab. They can’t be talking about any other type speed as the average vehicle SPEED in London is something like 9 MPH.  If it’s stupid enough TFL will support it. Fecking Muppets.

Er so I have to ask...

When driving the bus do you keep the pedal pressed firmly to the floor? I mean you cannot speed but need to keep to your schedule. This sounds dangerous
