Support grows for British Nürburgring

Could a public race circuit regenerate the local area and create a safer environment for those wishing to explore their vehicle's potential?

A CAMPAIGN to build a British version of the Nürburgring is growing in support.

The campaign started off the back of an existing project which proposed to build a MotoGP circuit at Ebbw Vale in Wales. This proposal was dubbed "a real game-changer" for the area by local MP Nick Smith.

The group behind the petition cite the example set by the Nürburgring in Germany, where its prescence has created a wealth of opportunity for local businesses through a healthy tourism industry which has rejuvenated the area, helping it to build schools, hospitals and leisure facilities.

The group also say a British Nürburgring would: "..be a centre for the public to explore speed in a safe environment, instead of on public roads causing harm to themselves and others." A public circuit on which to explore your vehicle's potential could also cut the NIMBY approach most counties have to speeding.

The petition for a British Nürburgring currently has over 1,500 signatures. If you'd like to see it happen, you can sign the petition here.

I signed it but I wonder if this is a practical idea - how much would this circuit cost to make and maintain ? Is this the best use of the investment ?

I reckon this could make a means for sustainability, in that it should make money, where as the purely MSV style of tracks requires race meets to bring in money and only survives off ticket prices. This could mean the circuit is paid for by punters, including the countless boy-racers that will flock to it and pay cash only to crash their Saxo into the Armco only to have to pay for that too!

yeah i agree. A cant see how a normal track would generate income for the surrounding area in the same way that this would. Its a fantastic idea!

Given that the UK is a nanny state, I don't know how well this would work. What happens the first time a dude on a bike high sides himself into a barrier or somebody manages to grab airtime in their hot hatch after understeering into the rumble strip and wipes out themselves and a few of their mates? Britain simply does not have the appetite for personal risk that such a venture requires.

I can just see it now, 30mph limit, speed bumps and unmarked "safety cars" following you around..

This is about as likely to happen in the UK as having Mad Sunday in the Peak District. Our society does not have that level of tolerence.

It is about time the British citizens of this country stood up and be counted
This would be a fantastic idea and under the right management create opportunities for the local area and business alike
When you go on the ring you take chance and are responsible for your self we all no the risks and it is our choice
So I would say to those who would want to impose to many restrictions to stay away and don’t stick your ores in
It is time to toughen up stand up and be counted

Bloody great idea when you look at the lay out on a map it could easily make a permenant track of about 14 miles without stopping local traffic. Nearly all the A roads are bordered by B roads. Couple of bridges Bob's your Uncle. It would be great for the area as long as a bunch of tossers like the crew who took power at the 'ring don't get thier hands on it.

I think done properly, this would be a fantastic idea, and would generate a good local income which would spread further afield as people traveling from a far would make more of there trip.
But what would eventually happen is the good old fashioned nanny state we have and health & safety bods would slap a 30 mph speed limit on it, but and F it all up for everyone

In principle, a great idea, but (there's always a but) all the time that the "phone you up and persuade you to claim for the injury you didn't remember having" industry is allowed to trade, then the insurance premiums for any business operating such a facility , would make it too expensive to run. Prices to punters would have to be pitched so high that only the very wealthy could use it. While this would curtail the chavs in their mobile stereos, it would also price it out of the reach of most other bike and car enthusiasts. No amount of disclaimers and signed liability waivers would stop the vultures, sorry, the insurance industry from charging exorbitant rates for public liability cover. without this cover no business that involves the public is allowed to operate.

Great Idea - I would vote for Leekingring.

Its just pampering and pandering [ for monitary gain only] to the minority [much less that 3%]that will want use the facility if they can afford it but wont spend less on learning the safe way to ride. What good is learning to ride to the maximum power and ability of their machine when they invariably cannot match it. They have egos bigger than their p....s or should i say brains.

After a great day on this track do u think it will change their poor attitude to riding safety on the road.... not a bit, it will just feed into that stupid attitude that they all possess.

Personally i can only wish that many of them have enough private insurance to look after their loved ones when they are gone. but i doubt that they have bothered considering that.

Lets not prevaricate. lets let them kill themselves and save the road for those of us that ride responsibly.

Bob what are you talking about..??

Bob, what indeed are you on about. Surely not another of these "Spoiling it for the rest of us" types?
It's a great idea.
