INTERNAL COMBUSTION engines of the future will be started by lasers instead of spark plugs - that's the claim being made by some of the UK's leading scientists.

An article in today's Daily Telegraph states that scientists at Liverpool University and engineers at Ford cars are developing a new system whish uses laser light to ignite fuel.

It's claimed the system will be more reliable and efficient than current technology. Ford claim they want to use the new system within the next couple of years - mostly in the high-end car market.

We like the idea; let's hope it reaches the motorcycle market. If nothing else it'll be the end of skining your sodding knuckles when trying to change spark plugs!
