466 million epower bikes by 2016, report claims

AN AMERICAN-BASED clean technology consultancy claims worldwide sales of electric powered two-wheelers will top 466 million units by the year 2016.

In its study 'Electric Two-Wheel Vehicles', Pike Research predicts worldwide sales of e-bikes, e-motorcycles and e-scooters are set to explode over the next six years.

“Demographics and economics are aligning to create a strong market opportunity for two-wheel electric vehicles,” says industry analyst Dave Hurst.  “In some countries, these vehicles will be engines of economic growth, while in others they will be signals of broader consumer behavioral shifts.”

China will dominate the global electric two-wheel vehicle market, representing more than 95% of sales during the next six years, claims Hurst.  He expects that e-bikes will the largest category with 56% of the market, followed by e-motorcycles at 43% and e-scooters in a distant third place with less than 1%.

Will most UK city centres be festooned with electric bikes in 10 years time?

We think so.

It'll happen. The technology is already here.

Soon as the manufacturers work out how to screw money out of everyone for it. Electric vehicles will be the norm.

Which is a total waste when we should be really be switching to hydrogen powered vehicles.

But who is going to support a fuel that is in mass abundance?

Still I'll wait for the availability of nuclear powered bikes before I switch.

It'll only happen if there is compulsion of some kind, or they give them away. They can't offer the speed and range of a normal bike yet (perhaps one or the other but not both), and the British weather will ensure that most car drivers stay in their cars.

I think it will happen considering that most of the worlds poorer nations only use motorcycles for cheap transport ,commuting  from work etc. Even in western countries most commuters are  not motorcycle enthusiasts, whatever costs the least to run they will buy it.  There will always be a market for true motorcyclist who enjoy thier machines for the power, looks, handling and pure joy of travelling short or long distances.
