Steam Packet changes affect 5,000 TT bikers

Schedule changes announced by TT ferry firm

THE TT is just around the corner and ferry company, Steam Packet, has recently made changes to the sailing itinerary of 5,000 TT fans.

Steam Packet has changed the departure ports and times for some of the 41,000 people booked to travel to the Isle of Man for the Centenary TT, which starts on Saturday.

Steam Packet communications manager Laura Howland said the company apologised for any inconvenience and added:

"Out of 41,000 passengers booked on our ferries, 5,000 are affected. We are informing passengers travelling this week by telephone and everyone affected by letter in the next 24 hours to advise them of their new port details and travel time. Many of these passengers are now being accommodated on our fast craft ferry, whereas, previously, they were booked on our conventional ferry. This will reduce their travel time considerably.

"We would ask all passengers to arrive at the times indicated on their ticket to avoid any problems. The sea traffic in and out of Douglas and UK and Irish ports will be unprecedented over the TT period and all ships will be operating to very tight port slots and turn around times.

"With approximately 18,000 bikes compared to 9,600 bikes booked on our ferries last year and approximately 5,000 cars and vans booked, we anticipate an exceptionally busy period. We would like to illustrate our appreciation of our customers' support and patience at this time.

"The necessary changes have been made to optimise passenger bookings and make this year's Centenary event a successful one for everyone concerned. Passengers wishing to discuss revised bookings should call our reservations line on 0871 222 1333 or alternatively +441624661661.

"We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused and are endeavouring to accommodate all our passengers at this exceptionally busy time for the company and the Island as a whole."

Why is it that the steam racket company still cant get their act right after a hundred years of sailings. The whole fiasco is nothing surprising, but it is ridiculous to think that 500 people are being inconvenienced yet again by them. To make the situation worse still, there doesn't seem to be any consideration for those who block booked (large froups of friends going together), the alterations are more like a name and number lottery. There are reports of groups being split up not only from being on the same sailings, but even different days and ports.
Tickets to the island for a bike and rider are extortionately priced, but it almost looks as though this is an overbooking issue left til the last minute. The TT has always been something that needs careful planning for those doing hotels and similar accomodation as pretty much everybody will be booked up ready for the throng of riders over there during this busy period., sailing a day earlier could mean park bench for the night. The comment on the BBC site from the SPC about customers benefitting from faster sailings by going on the 'fast craft' is also irksome. Many choose a port of preference rather than the ships model (while others avoid the Ben mcree for different reasons). It's all well and good being moved to one of the cats, but if it means going from a different port, the 3 quarters of an hour shaving off the sailing time is written off by the 90 minute increase to the ride time getting to the port (my mate just had his moved from liverpool to Heysham at the last minute). Even more time needed if you havent sailed from the new port before.
Regardless of the apologies from the steam racket company, it is a shoddy state of affairs and may ruin an awful lot of holidays. In some ways the ferry crossing is one of the most stressful parts of the holiday, especially watching your pride and joy being tied down in such close proximity to other bikes, then having people clambering over your bike to get to theirs, this whole situation just makes matters worse.
