Speeding Cornish biker clocked at 170mph

ZX-10R pilot nabbed at two-and-a-half times the National Speed Limit

A SPEEDING biker is facing a prison sentence after he was clocked at 170MPH by Police.

Fred Bowden, 42, from Cornwall, was caught riding his Kawasaki ZX-10R at almost two-and-a-half times the National Speed Limit on an unrestricted dual carriageway on July 13th last year.

The Sun newspaper reports Bowden is also accused of riding at 70mph in a 40mph limit, 100mph in a 60mph limit and 124mph in a 70mph zone.

Alison May, prosecuting, told magistrates in Truro, Cornwall, yesterday: "This was an extended period of dangerous driving. There were very high speeds involved."

Bowden's case is set to continue at Truro Crown Court next month.

Is 170 a record?

Posted: 19/02/2009 at 11:32

i would think it is quite close to a record, but maybe not one you would like to have to plead guilty to

Got no sympathy whatsoever for this guy I'm afraid. I love the speed of a bike but why couldn't he book himself on a trackday ffs... Just giving all the idiots like brunstrom even more ammo in the quest to get us restricted/banned...

I wonder if it was on 04/05 or 06/07 or new 08 one. I manager 189mph on the clock at the Nurburgring on my 04. 170 is a bit excessive but as with all things I think the other offences play a significant part. Perhaps 1 year on an SR50?. The annoying part of any license losing is that you lose both the CAR and the Bike if you get busted on either! Pay two lots of increased Insurance! I think jail is ridiculous. Nowhere near the same league as rapists etc...

Never rode down the A30 then....???

Personally, I would say that 170mph is quite reckless, and I would never admit to doing 186mph..... never ever.....

You have to go out at the right time of the evening when all the holiday makers are off the road.

Where did you go for your cream tea then??

Why would you want to do that speed on a pubic road? When you can go on track? I don't get it?????????????

spelling optional

Wheres the nearest track to Cornwall??

Not condoning his actions or the speed, though as said, there are times and roads with no traffic on where you can rack up that kind of speed.

I agree that the kind of speed he was done for does belong on the track.

Because I can do it.

Safely. Many, many, many times. Sometimes on one wheel. Occasionally plowing through a field of fucking kittens.

The law on speeding is sadly wrong.

With the clay industry moving out of the county, there is plenty of room for a track down here if someone has any cash spare....

Choose the right location and you'll be miles away from any complaining home owners..... add a speedway track and you'll be on a winner!!

I have a feeling this was a case last year in Cornwall where there was a fatal RTA on the Hayle bypass at the Loggins roundabout end. Couple of bikers had been looning it, one clipped a car as he overtook and went head on into a lorry coming the other way, the by pass is not full dual carriageway and has no central barrier. That rider was killed and his mate also came off when he hit some debris...the rumour at the time was that the surviving lad had a tank mounted video camera on his bike with full recording of their exploits that day.

This very much sounds like him.

We have all acted like complete tools on our bikes at some point so I cant really condemn him, but recording yourself acting like a tool then letting the evidence fall into the hands of les federales is not a good career move!!!

I think the nearest track from us in west cornwall is Thruxton, thats over two hundred miles from Penzance, so we dont have the facility to do track days down here. Unfortunately you would be pissing into wind trying to start up a track down here as those same people who buy houses near airports then complain about the noise are very much in abundance down here. You know the type..lets go and buy a  holiday cottage in Cornwall because nobody down there can afford the property, and use it two weeks of the year...then complain about the sounds of tractors or farm animals. So starting up track days down here anywhere...no fucking chance!

Drahcir08

It was a tongue in cheek comment with regards to building a track down here Sam..... We cant even get permission to build a speedway track on the outskirts of bodmin, let alone build a race track.

thing is, Im right about there being plenty of Imerys land being available to build on, especially when they start closing more of the pits etc.

The Eden Project was built in a disused pit, but the surrounding land was also used, dont know if you have ever been there but the site, not just the biomes, is massive.... I know, I worked down there!!

It would never even get off the ground though, people with the amount of money it would need think England stops at Devon ( just for you Wavey )

arnt there any old / underused airfields down there?

Posted: 20/02/2009 at 10:44

sneakysam

There is a pretty good airfield on the Lizard called Predannick, the Navy still use it as a satellite station for Culdrose air station near Helston. It has a massive main runway and miles of taxi way, it's a bit exposed on top of the cliffs however. I dont know how the navy manage to retain it any more as there is only a quarter of the aircraft at Culdrose as there used to be.

There is another one called St Eval up near Perranporth which would be more central for people, it's used for some light general aviation and gliding...but they have all sorts of noise complaint problems up there.

A track near St Austell would be fantastic..but I dont see it happening, it's all grass track and moto X down here.

There is a small RAF base at Portreath near Camborne on the north coast, it's still operational as a bit of a radar site and tracking type of place, it has a small runway there and they do a run wot you brung sprint event for charity each year.

but that is it.....

What about Davidstow airfield near Camelford...??

I think its pretty much unused since WW2 and would need a little improving shall we say....

my ex got 192 out of his zx10r and said the possibiliy of challenging how fast it could go was enough to make him reckless. I gave him a bollocking, sure speed is fun but you only gotta hit a rabbit/pothole/spillage and you're dead. Buried too many biker mates in my lifetime, the last one was a month off his 30th birthday and had a one year old daughter and a three year old son. It aint worth dying for

this is ongoing at at Truro crown court at present. His tank cam showed him doing 170 at some point in his trip but not at the point where his mate was killed.

Speeding is a personal choice.. when and where to do it etc...but we all do it so lets not get hypocritical. This man saw his friend die in front of him and was pretty badly injured himself, he has had the threat of a prison sentence hanging over him for nearly a year, the police are going to make him look like fred west, gary glitter and Ian Brady all rolled into one...he is almost certainly going down for a stretch. I personally think "there but for the grace of god go I" .. myself..like a lot of others have never done 170 on a public road..but I have done close..as have a lot of others..we were lucky and got away with unlike this lad.

I dont know the full facts etc, but, did he kill any innocent civilians?, did he break into any houses and steal any valuables,  to sell for drugs, did he slash or injure any person to such a degree that their life would be adversly affected by said injurys. we hear every week of "Real" criminals who commit crimes such as burglary, assault with intent etc, but who get let off with a suspended sentence. If he gets sent down it's a fuckin joke, political more than anything. If some folk are going to quote the law, then the law is the law,gow many of us has been blasting along..looked down at the clock and went WOW!!! and backed off a bit, and if you've ever went over the speed limit then the quote of "people who live in glass houses" etc.... Jail sentence... no, is he a twat...yes.

I'm all for deregulating speed restrictions on certain m/ways and dual carriageways, as is in Germany... and tightening test requirements for UK drivers, perhaps even retesting everyone who hasn't passed and aquired an unrestricted bike licence.

He should face the death penalty, a bike traveling at these speeds could cut a car in half.
