Speeding biker jailed by Facebook evidence

Social networking site blows speeding biker's cover after he denies racing on A65

Posted: 1 July 2009
by Visordown News

A BIKER who denied a speeding charge, claiming the person seen riding his bike was a visiting motorcyclist from another country, has been jailed after Police used the internet to uncover his lies.

David Cox, 46, fled from Police after being clocked racing another motorcycle at 84mph on the A65 near Skipton, North Yorkshire.

But despite his attempt to scarper, Cox's registration number was captured by a police camera. When later questioned, Cox claimed the rider of his bike at the time of the offence was a woman visiting from the USA.

Using the internet, Police tracked the woman and persuaded two state troopers in the US to check Cox's claim. The woman denied the offence.

The American woman pointed UK Police to images of Cox on the internet, where they discovered Cox on social networking site Facebook, pictured riding the same motorbike on the day he was seen speeding.

Cox was arrested, charged and jailed for five months after he admitted perverting the course of justice at Bradford Crown Court but his sentence has since been reduced to three months on appeal.

He was also banned from the roads for 12 months.

Because, when the police pull us over, we all say " Its a fair cop guv ", don't we.  Only a cunt would admit anything to a copper, if he knew their was a slim chance of getting nicked.

The lengths the copper went to to nick the bloke just proves hes a wanker that would go to great lengths for such a trivial thing.

They thought their chance of getting nicked was slim.  But it wasn't.  They got his reg, he lied about riding the bike, they investigated and he got banned on the evidence posted on the internet.

And the lengths the rider went to avoid it are not?

It does get even funnier (from the Telegraph)

Cox was arrested in January and struggled and fought with officers as he was detained.

I should think being locked up in jail for attempting to pervert the course of justice will  concentrate his mind somewhat and might make others consider the consequences of their actions.

More of  Speedy's usual bollocks...he is unable to see the wood for the trees..

Its an investigation tactic akin to terrorism...shoot a few to get the attention of the many..

peppipoo and similar sites have been full of crap advice like' tell them your Aussie cousin was riding it'...it was announced that the police would be checking these stories ( after all how many thousands of 'unknown mates' are on the road at any one time) ( especially when you read all the ' I would kill anyone that sat on my bike' posts that appear on the net???)

Serves the tosser right for not being man enough to own up to a £60 fine and 3 points...

In principle yes, but I dont think it is, its not like hes drowning new born babies in a bucket is it, and the coppers gone out of his way to get it from a minor bit of stupidity to a prison term.

The guy obviously panicked when the copper pulled, told some wild fantasy crap story and instead of giving him a bollocking the coppers been a total tosser about it, he gone about it like the blokes some sort of serial killer.  You may not agree, but your not going to convince me any different.

And you expect me to think the copper was right?.

I do get the fact he broke the law and they've followed that up, but all that time and effort for a speeding offence?? Yet when I was knocked off,  hit and run, and there were CCTV units all round, Plod wouldn't follow it up as "not in public interest".

Sgt Les Moorhouse, of North Yorkshire Police, said the case was "a great example of the effective use of the internet as an investigative tool."

He added: "This case sends out a clear message to all riders coming into the county that North Yorkshire Police officers will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to bring dangerous and criminal road users to justice.

"It was shocking but, sadly, not surprising to discover that some people will go to great and calculating lengths to avoid being caught by the police."

Perhaps sadder is the great and calculating lengths that the police will go to on a traffic offence.

There is no way you can condone his behaviour but you MUST question the lengths that the police have gone to in order to convict one man for speeding (the original offence). It's ridiculous.

"Perverting the course" isn't a traffic offence.

Must say though, at 84mph, it wasn't a very fast race.

yes, but the officer could have given him a firm bollocking and left it at that hes hardley speeding like a mad man is he.  Taking the piss speeding in my book is 100mph +.  You don't know why the bloke lied current points?, good bye to liscence?, but obviously he got pc pig when he got a tug.  Not saying the blokes right but things went a bit extreme.
Posted: 02/07/2009 13:18

Donteatpeople

Its not exactly loads of effort they had to put in though was it? With all the spacebook and myface that people are using now you can find people fairly easily. So it’s maybe an hour on google, a couple of phone calls to the police in America and then the evidence fell in their laps.

One officer spending a mornings work teaching what sounds like a cocky twat that the police are not completely stupid and perverting the course of justice is a real crime seems worth while to me.

It wasn't the speeding that he got sent to jail for though.  His mate got a £60 +3 points ticket at the roadside.

He didn't wait around to find out if he had got 'PC Pig' did he?  He scarperd, got found, lied, refused to answer questions, put up a fight and sent to jail.

Cox by name cock by nature.

Lostboysaint

Once again there's shit being posted on here for the sake of getting a row going!

Read my post again, the ORIGINAL offence was speeding.

Yes, the bloke was a twat for hiding it, yes he was eventually jailed for perverting the course of justice and yes he made a rod for his own back.Yes he is a cox!!

But is it really THAT important an offence (the speeding) for the constabulary to get so zealous about? For every minute they were on the web chasing down this master-criminal there were many other offences going on in their area. How well protected do you really think the population of that region feels knowing that other offences were being carried out whilst this bloke was being across the virtual world just so they could say "you were doing 84, and you lied and we found you out!" When was the last time a little scroat who'd been vandalising/theiving was tugged because they'd raided his house and found the same clothes as on a CCTV picture?

It's a pathetic use of resources.

Posted: 02/07/2009 14:25

Lodonmun

What so they're supposed to just let it go if you run off and say 'it was my mate from America' are they?

If he DID have 9 points already, then maybe he should have slowed down a bit.

Lostboysaint wrote (see)

The bit you seem to be having trouble with is that they are not 'getting 'zealos' over the speeding - they were finding out why he buggered off.  Could be any number of reasons couldn't it?

Once they found him he lied and they checked his alibi.  Or would you have every copper believe whatever they are told?

Posted: 02/07/2009 14:51

Ginner

IMO it was coming to him.  He obviously has no self control on a bike.  seems to be a good bit of police work.

Last boy saint: - i can see your point.  There are a lot more worthy crimes that need to be investigated more than speeding.

Posted: 02/07/2009 15:42

Donteatpeople

But if everything was prioritised like that and all police time was spent on more serious crimes then petty crimes would rocket. There needs to be a bit of policing for lesser crimes or a lot of people would just ignore the ‘less important’ laws because they would know they would get away with it.

If you let people who flee from police and then lie when they catch up with them get away with it as it’s not important then what message does that send out? Where do you draw the line? Is speeding not worth perusing? What about running red lights? Leaving the scene of an accident? Shoplifting? It’s a slippery slope if you go down the route of deciding which laws are not important.

Posted: 02/07/2009 15:59

Lodonmun
Agreed; there's absolutely no point in having a law which is not going to be enforced. As soon as no effort is put into enforcing it, get rid of it.
Posted: 02/07/2009 17:52

tripod_dave

I'm gonna hate myself for saying this but I'm with FJS on this.

Its one thing to get done for speeding its quite another to try perverting the course of justice. He was speeding (ok), did a runner (fair), got caught (boo), lied about it stupidly and got done for it.

Having said that a criminal conviction for basically being a stupid w4nk3r can seem a little harsh when seen from some angles but I guess the CPS wanted to make an example of him 'pour encourager les autres' as it were.

FUCKIN HELL!!! Jail time for lying to the police, oh heaven help us..imagine lying to the police...oh my goodness what is the world coming to. Did he break into an old womans home and ransack the house looking for money for drugs...NO, did he rape a pissed woman coming out of a night club.....NO. Did he molest a child....NO. No one was physically harmed so why the jail time? Just because he tried to take the piss out the police, is it in the public's best interest to lock him up? will joe public sleep safe at night in the knowledge that this man is locked up.......Aye right.  A hefty fine and a suspended sentance would have been sufficient.
Posted: 02/07/2009 19:57

I agree it was too harsh a sentence. But I don't agree that the police were wasting their time.

The entire legal process is based on trust in what people say. Getting caught lying to get off with your crime and  implicating an innocent party is serious and he was jailed for it. Good.
