South Yorkshire Police target off-road menaces

'Operation Biker' targets the anti-social use of motorcycles on the Trans Pennine Trail

SOUTH YORKSHIRE Police have heralded an operation aimed at curbing local off-road motorcycling menaces as a success.

'Operation Biker' took place on Sunday 5th October to combat the anti-social use of motorcycles on the Trans Pennine Trail. The initiative has lead to the recovery of 6 motorcycles and an arrest for dangerous driving.

Police Officers, Park Ranger volunteers and Police and Community Support Officers (PCSO’s) on mountain bikes showed the meaning of true teamwork and dedication to the operation.

One of the bikes seized was identified as one which had caused mayhem throughout the day. The rider of this bike came to the attention of officers as was seen to be driving dangerously without concern for pedestrians lawfully using the trail.

The rider was arrested as he collided with 2 of the PCSO’s after all efforts to stop him had failed. Neither PCSO was injured in the collision. However, two of the PCSO’s pushbikes were damaged in the incident.

Police Sergeant Richard Close said: "This operation has been a great success in making a fantastic facility safer for those who use it lawfully. We will continue to deal with all elements of anti-social behaviour in Barnsley robustly, and strive to further reduce these kind of incidents for everyone’s benefit."
