Force to kit out all new vehicles with sensors to reduce low speed collision bill
SOUTH YORKSHIRE Police are to fit every new vehicle on the force's fleet with parking sensors to reduce the number of low speed prangs caused by botched parking collisions. It's estimated the force spends an average of £60,000 a year on mending damage caused during low-speed parking manoeuvres, despite the extra driver training most police officers have to undertake. The vehicles will be fitted with sensors which bleep when a car is driven too close to another object.David Blunkett, the Former Home Secretary and Sheffield's MP for Brightside and Hillsborough, commented: "Perhaps it would be worth spending a bit of money on advanced driving courses."South Yorkshire Police fleet manager Martin Whysall said: "Police station yards were not necessarily designed for cars and they can be tight in terms of space."South Yorkshire's problem appears miniscule compared to what happens further North; figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show in the year up until April 2010 Merseyside Police spent £205,403.07 in total on repairing crashed cars.
