HEAVY FINANCIAL losses at last year's event have forced organisers to scrap 2008's Scarborough International Bike Week, says the Scarborough Evening News.

The event, which is in its 12th year, has been sidelined by organisers Auto 66 Club. Their Press Officer, Phil Edge, said:

“After a poor time last year for Bike Week it was decided to try out a new format to see if we could improve things.

“Both in terms of finacial reward and attendances we believe that we can do better, and we will look at the new structure for a couple of years and see how it goes.

“Hopefully, it will be a success and that it will be a benefit to both ourselves and racing fans alike.

“We are always open to change and want to make the most of the Mount events because it has been such a popular circuit over the years.”

Top names and regulars such as Guy Martin, Ian Lougher and Chris Palmer are expected to be back in action at the famous circuit this summer.

Not really bad news as its to be split into 2 events..... Barry Sheene Classic and Cock o' the North

Here is the full article!!!

SCARBOROUGH International Bike Week has been scrapped following the heavy financial loss made by last year's event. After 11 years of the week-long attraction, organisers Auto 66 Club have decided it is time for a new look for this summer’s action.

Last year’s event kicked-off with the Barry Sheene Classic Road Race Festival in June with the week culminating in the Cock o’ the North Road Races the following weekend.

Attendances were down on the usual numbers, causing a loss in revenue.

This year the Sheene races will be an event in their own right, taking place on the weekend of June 21-22, with the Cock o’ the North races three weeks later on July 12-13.

Auto 66 Club press officer Phil Edge said: “After a poor time last year for Bike Week it was decided to try out a new format to see if we could improve things.

“Both in terms of financial reward and attendances we believe that we can do better, and we will look at the new structure for a couple of years and see how it goes.

This year’s Oliver’s Mount schedule

April 20 (Sunday) Ian Watson Spring Road Races.

June 21-22 (Saturday & Sunday) Barry Sheene Classic Road Race Festival.

July 12-13 (Saturday & Sunday) Cock o’ the North Road Races.

September 20-21 (Saturday & Sunday) Steve Henshaw Gold Cup.

I expect the bad weather affected attendance. I know alot of outdoor events suffered because of the rain. Am glad it is carrying on - maybe it was a bit optimistic having a week of activities.

Am sure they will do better over 2 separate weekends than 1 full week... much easier to attend events on a weekend than to commit a weeks time off

Lets hope they do as its great watching at Olivers Mount!
