THE BIKE Parking Tax, introduced by Westminster on a trial basis and due to be made permanent from February 2009, will be rolled out across the rest of the UK confirmed Westminster Director of Parking on Watchdog on Monday.

The Pay by Phone method, slammed as socially exclusive, makes it now easier for the rest of the 32 London Boroughs to charge once it is ratified by Westminster. From London it will go to Birmingham, Liverpool, Peterborough and then the rest of the UK. Westminster Councillor Danny Chalkley confirmed it has been a big success.

A projected £585,000 will be raised in the full year 2008/2009 project officer Audrey Li reported. Despite only costing £23,000 to "extend the bays and open up the car parks..." confirmed Alastair Gilchrist Director of Parking Westminster City Council.

You can get involved by going to: www.notobikeparkingfees.com

or sending your thoughts on the matter to the Director of Parking Westminster City Council by e-mailing: agilchrist@westminster.gov.uk

Err! They want to encourage people to use their cars less which is where motorbikes come into play - cheaper and greener all round - but how is this going to encourage people to use motorbikes instead of cars in city centres? The fact I can park my bike every day for free whilst I go to work is one of the huge benefits! The place where I park isnt exactely clean and tidy and looked after very well by the local council mind you and I wonder if this would improve if I have to start paying?

Exactly one of the reasons I use bikes instead of cars, free liverpool tunnel, free parking anywhere, in chester they have cycle bays with huge ground anchors that motorcycles can easily fit in, almost in the centre which is popular place, little chance of your bike getting nicked without someone getting suspicious.

We suffer enough risking our lives, braving the weather, BMW drivers, illogical road tax, etc. I don't see why bikers are getting punished other than another money spinner for the local councils.

Perhaps it's all part of a much bigger conspiracy?

If 25% to 50% of bikers can be coerced into giving up biking and revert to taking unreliable but oh-so-expensive public transport, or worse still, rely totally on a cage, guess who's quids in? (Hint - Obscene Fuel Taxation by you know who). Never mind public transport, in a car, you pay more road tax, use far more petrol (depending on engine capacity) and are always at the mercy of "extra local government taxation" - via any of the newly created road traffic contraventions, or parking contraventions. Yes, all those CCTV cameras ARE out to get you, not protect you. These days, you get accused of some bogus road traffic contravention on a whim, then you spend months trying to prove your innocence (personal experience twice, PCN was thrown out) - or just give in and hand over the readies. With the UK having the most expensive fuel in europe, I guess our legislators will do anything to disuade those of us who are getting from A to B for 10 quid a month on a bike (freedom to go pretty much where you please), instead of 80 quid a month for the same journey (just much slower, stuck in traffic jams, using up even MORE fuel and paying through the nose for it). A bike = freedom.

I also suspect someone out there doesn't really like the idea of guys and gals in helmets (largely unidentifiable) riding around Westminster everyday (with percieved impunity) - perhaps they think it's a security risk? Of course, most of the conspiracy theory stuff above is pure speculation, though, i'm sure some governmental bean counter wishes all bikers were in cars - just for the extra fuel tax and road tax revenue.

Or it could just be one very greedy council with a grudge against bikers (or, just see's us as cash cows to be ruthlessly exploited).

Don't blame me .

Living in this country DOES make one rather paranoid these days.

If you don't think it will happen in your town, you are wrong. Westminster are making a mint out of us, and every other council is taking note.

So go on a demo, they're a bit of fun if nothing else.

Then sign up
