BIKERS IN Nigeria are attempting to avoid the country's new helmet laws by wearing dried pumpkin shells on their heads.

Officials say they've stopped several bikers with "improvised helmets", following this month's introduction of the law. Police have all also impounded thousands of motorbikes belonging to owners that have been flouting the new law, says a report in today's BBC News.

"We are impounding their bikes and want to take them to court so they can explain why they think wearing a calabash is good enough for their safety," said Federal Road Safety Commission commander Yusuf Garba.
