Poole Quay bike night wins award

Bikers win international safety award? Not quite.

THE bike night at Poole Quay has won an International Road Safety award.

The award was given not to the bikers who turn up to the event but to Dorset Police, Poole Tourism and the volunteer marshals. The Prince Michael International Road Safety Award was presented by the man himself, Prince Michael of Kent, at a fancy ceremony at The Savoy Hotel in London.

At its peak, over 2,000 bikes turn up to the Poole Quay Bike Night, which is hosted every Tuesday evening from April to September. Each week a 'Bike of the Night' is picked and at the end of the season, all the winning bikes go up against each other. The event celebrated its official 10th anniversary in 2011.

Dorset Police’s bike safe team attend each week to spread road safety messages.

“Having been involved with the event for the past seven years we have worked tirelessly in partnership with the event team and marshals to reduce the number of bike accidents linked to it. We have had significant success in changing the attitudes of riders attending the event and I believe this has resulted in the number of bike accidents falling year on year. ” said PC Chris Smith of Dorset Police traffic unit.

"...I believe this has resulted in the number of bike accidents falling year on year."

All the while increasing the revenue to the police coffers in fines for small number plates, loud pipes, dark visors etc so a win win for the coppers then?

Poole quay on a tuesday night used to be great 12-15yrs ago, but then it got popular with "born agains", the police started using it as an "easy nick" to get fines, and it got too busy to park along the quay so you had to park elsewhere and walk leaving your bike to be thieved!

Me and my mates used to go as far away as we could get from the quay on a tues!!!! If you've every seen the film Wild Hogs then that pretty much sums up most of the people who go down the quay now.
