BIRMINGHAM POLICE motorcyclists are to work in conjunction with local bus services by providing a fast-response escort on problem routes in the city if trouble occurs.
The scheme, the first of its kind in the UK, will also use plain clothes police officers on targeted routes across the city.
Plans for the fast response units are likely to be confirmed within a month and included into the Safer Travel scheme - a link-up between Birmingham City Council, West Midlands Police and Centro.
A spokesman for Travel West Midlands said:
"We have been talking about the bike and plain clothes police options and they will be great resource to use. It will also underline how strong our partnership is with the police.
"The police bikers will have a presence further up the road and will be called in as and when they are needed and will work in partnership with intelligence provided from plain clothes officers on the buses."
