Police accused of misplaced speed cameras

A number of motorists, including several bikers, have complained after being issued with speeding tickets at the £12m works to build an interchange at Long Newton.

They claim there were no 50mph speed limit signs before the fixed yellow speed camera when they were flashed and sent penalty notices. Sign have been erected but they're positioned down the road from the cameras.

Cleveland Police deny the accusations and insist the 50mph signs were in place and clearly visible when the camera went into action.

A police spokeswoman said the camera, positioned before the major roadworks on the A66 Darlington direction, was changed to 50mph on Sunday, March 30.

“But it didn’t go live until 11.30am on April 3 because the signage wasn’t in place until then,” she said.

“When it went live, there were two 50mph signs that are both clearly visible.

“The camera may have flashed before then, but we won’t be looking to prosecute until after 11.30am on April 3.”
