Partnership defends 6700 per cent mobile camera ticket increase

Over 1400 road users caught speeding at Suffolk mobile camera location compared to just 21 the previous year

A ROAD safety partnership in Suffolk has defended its tactics after the number of road users caught speeding at one of the partnership's mobile camera locations rose from 21 to more than 1,400 in the space of a year.

The data, from a location in Ipswich, shows the number of people caught speeding through the use of mobile equipment went up from 21 in 2008 to 1,434 in 2009, despite there being only one accident on the stretch which lead to serious injury in the past three years.

The data was obtained from Suffolk Police through a Freedom of Information request.

The county's Road Safety Partnership has defended the figures, claiming the area had become a target for mobile units following complaints about speeding from local residents.

Terry Marsh, partnership manager for the Suffolk Safecam road safety partnership, said: “Henley Road has been the subject of a number of complaints over the years of speeding and it’s one of the busy routes into and out of Ipswich, used by commuter traffic, which probably explains why people are in such a hurry.

“It’s not been identified as a particular accident ‘hot spot’ so it is simply in response to complaints of a significant speeding problem.

“There’s no reason or motivation whatsoever to target an area to get large numbers of people speeding, other than to deter these people from speeding because it’s either resulting in a large number of collisions and injuries or because it’s such an issue for people living around the area that it’s affecting the quality of their lives.”

Motoring groups have slated the results, saying the amount of fines dished out does not reflect the location's relatively low accident rate.

WOW! What a huge source of revenue this is! I am confused as the article says:

“It’s not been identified as a particular accident ‘hot spot’ so it is simply in response to complaints of a significant speeding problem," and yet go on to say ... “There’s no reason or motivation whatsoever to target an area to get large numbers of people speeding, other than to deter these people from speeding because it’s either resulting in a large number of collisions and injuries or because it’s such an issue for people living around the area that it’s affecting the quality of their lives.”Must be affecting the quality of lives as there has only been one serious collision.

Its nothing to do with safety , it should be called "revenue partnership "  as we all no its to do with money .

Well it wont be long before we have the most advanced vehicles and have  to hire someone with a red flag to walk in front of it .

Does the Saftey Partnership think the public are all total idiots and believe the cock and bull excuse that it is all about complaints from local residents ?

Roads are targetted now by mobile speed cameras after a survey is conducted to see how many speeding vehicles pass through that road, it has nothing to do with safety or complaints its just using the cameras as 'Cash Cows'

Dosn't matter how many accidents there were, those caught were breaking the law.Not a popular view I know but it's the facts. Is anyone really suggesting that the Police shouldn't be catching lawbreakers?

They don't need excuses, they're doing their job.If you don't like the traffic laws don't use the roads,if you don't break the law you'll never get a speeding ticket...ever.

Yes I speed sometimes,I know the law,I know the speed limits,if I didn't I shouldn't be on the road.If I get caught it's my fault,not the Polices,not the Cameras....mine and I won't bleat about it.

And stop being so bloody selfish, just because there hasn't been a lot of accidents dosn't mean speeding traffic isn't affecting the lives of local people,I'm a biker, been riding for over 30 years but if I'd got hold of the prat that used to go past my flat at 3 a.m. every Saturday on an un-silenced Suzuki SV1000 I'd have glady joined the lynch mob that were threatening to ambush him one morning.

Does the "saftey" Partnership think we're all idiots? Probably if they read the crap spewed out by Kevin Ash and his sheep-like followers, the Sun e.t.c. about speed cameras without any thought for what they're saying or how their behaviour affects other people.

Just to sum up,1400 road users either decided to break the law or were too stupid and/or incompetent  to be able to control their vehicle and got fined for it.Tough shit, learn to ride/drive or don't break the law and it won't happen again."Simples" as that sodding annoying rat thing says on the advert.

I was under the impression that it is better to prevent speeding in the first place rather than to catch people after committing the crime, or ?

So why the hell a speed camera much better to put speed bumps every 20m down Henley Road in the aim of prevention, I am sure the residents would like the 24/7 sleeping policeman solution that much more (bump bump, bump bump)
