No money for motorway service stations

155-mile stretch of Irish motorway won't get any service stations due to lack of government funding

THINKING OF touring Ireland on your bike? Better make sure you're fully fuelled in every sense, as one of the country's major motorways lacks any form of service station, due to a lack of Government funds.

Citing a lack of money for the reason no new services will be built along the 155-mile stretch that connects Dublin and Cork, the National Roads Authority (NRA) is now putting up the signs warning of no 'online' services ahead, and instead directing motorists to petrol stations in nearby towns.

Plans for four service stations along the 155-mile stretch have been shelved due to a lack of funding.

'It's as important to let people know what's there as what is not there,' a spokesman for the NRA told the Irish Independent newspaper.

The AA motoring group has branded the situation 'unacceptable'.

Conor Faughnan, AA director of policy, told RTE radio: 'It's a pretty poor half measure in all honesty, it does rather devalue the motorway network.

'I guess sign of the times; they are pleading that they simply don't have the money.'

The lack of services won't affect most motorist's most cars can cover more than 155 miles on a tank of fuel, it will be more difficult for most motorcyclists, the average bike would just about make the end of the road if started the journey on a full tank, (if travelling within the legal speed limit), some sports bikes may need to fill up at one of the towns on route, but why would a biker want to use a motorway when there are so many great biking roads to choose from along the way.

Does it not also have exits?  Surely the budget will stretch to incorporating nearby fuel stations into the signage?

Judging by the extortionate prices charged at UK services, I'm shocked government funding is even needed for their development.

What? I thought oil compaines built service stations. I think they have a few pennies in the piggy bank. All the better for the small towns then I'd assume.
