No jail for uninsured hit-and-run driver

Lincolnshire driver escapes prison after leaving biker seriously injured then torching his car to hide evidence

A MALE DRIVER who seriously injured a motorcyclist in a road collision, before fleeing the scene then setting fire to his car to hide the evidence, has escaped a prison sentence.

Earlier this week, Lincoln Magistrates' Court heard how Kerry Miles Pick, 25, ran a red light in Broadgate, Lincoln, before colliding with the biker. Realising the seriousness of his actions, Pick then fled the scene before deliberately torching his car.

The motorcyclist, whose name has yet to be released by Police, sustained a broken knee, ankle and arm.

In court, Pick pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention, no insurance, no MOT test certificate and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

But Magistrates chose not to hand down a custodial sentence as Pick had entered an early guilty plea. Instead he'll get a high level community order.

And if we get caught speeding on an open road with nobody else in sight, we can end up in jail if the speed is high enough.

The real pity of this sort of crap is that erodes respect fopr the law and its agents.

he shouldn't have been on the road anyway, running a light caused the accident, he left the scene, then attempted to pervert the course of justice. . .and he walks. I would say I don't believe it but i do

Didn't some biker who was racing a car get two years? The car hit somebody and killed someone. The biker was infront and just kept going.

Seems the American plea bargin system is alive and well here.

If a biker had hit someone and driven away, they would get locked up.  This clown broke all the rules almost killed a guy and then concelled the evedence and he gets F**k all.  Let down by the justice system again!

if it were a biker, book thrown at them and then some!, I think they call it "making an example" of us, car drivers though, get away with it, wheres "being made an example of" fooked if i know, not exactly giving the right signal here, whats stopping a 17yr old kid whos just passed his test wouldnt do the same cause daddy couldnt afford the insurance, who knows he'll get away with it. tut tut!!

I thought this kind of crap only happened in the US....

I was hoping that in the UK the courts were more enlightened when dealing with motorist running down motorcyclist...

Sadly, I guess I was wrong...

I presume the speeding jail biker admitted he was speeding...so why didn't he get the same plea bargaining treatment?

Write to your MP's if you feel so strongly about it. Write to your Newspapers too. And the biking press. Complaining about it on here will achieve nothing.

This has been like reading a radio phone in transcript. None of the offences the driver pleaded to carries a jail sentence.  So the court had no option to impose custody. So the senile decrepit...were in the right and some of the posters have displayed ignorance. People get put in prison for dangerous or death by dangerous or death by careless. No custody for Insurance, failing to stop,no MOT or careless driving.
