New Yamaha hybrid revealed!

Visordown gets first pictures of the new dual-fuel Yamaha hybrid

Posted: 28 August 2009
by Visordown News

HOT NEWS and pictures fresh from Europe: Toyota and Yamaha will work together to build the first hybrid motorcycle.

Sources say, the machine will be powered by both a 20bhp internal combustion engine and an electric motor.

The water-cooled, 250cc horizontal single is capable of sending power to the rear wheel or the electric generator to keep the batteries topped up. Obviously, the system will be controlled by a sophisticated ECU.

Clever stuff! We can't wait to take one for a rip!

Piaggio announced the MP3 hybrid last year but their scooters are reported to use a belt-n-cone variable transmission.  As a Prius owner, I'm familiar with Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive which is sun-n-planetary gear driven for a much smoother and reliable drive.  Plus, with the 2010 Prius, Toyota shrank the size of their gears and motor significantly.  It should be no problem mounting this on a motorcycle.  This will be really interesting.

Ugly...a matter of opinion…many of the granola eating, tree hugging, pocket protector wearing members of our society see them as  phallic symbols

Dont panic people! I work for Toyota and can tell you that the sandle wearing tree huggers are meerly finance the r&d for the more nice models to follow. The Prius will soon spin off a coupe with proper performance from the hybrid system (anyone driven a lexus hybrid? they are proper quick!) and as the tech gets cheaper and smaller we will see it on everything. Imagine a screamer style engine with a electric motor to smooth the transition from low revs?  sound fun to me!

I'd love a bike with the smooth power delivery of my Prius!  I'd love to see a more touring size machine though, a 250 just wont cut it even with a miniture hybrid sinergy drive system,  Maybe 500cc and all that electric torque!!

Of course the nitrous oxide fuelled 'kers' button should be a hoot combined with the jump leads.....
