Video shows Suzuki’s Extriggers communicating

New technology enables data transfer between motorcycles

SUZUKI has released a video demonstrating some new technology on their miniature electric concept bike, the Extrigger.

The Extrigger features Casio's 'Visible Light Communication' (VLC) technology which utilises a multicoloured light at both the front and back of the bike to transmit data. This data can be read by an iPhone app called Picapicamera which uses the iPhone camera to read the data and then displays it as a message on your screen.

In this new video released by Suzuki, you can see two Extriggers 'communicating with' each other, resulting in messages displaying on the bike's digital dashboard.

We first saw the Extrigger electric concept when it was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2013, alongside Suzuki's turbocharged Recursion concept.

The Extrigger has a 0.58kW electric motor borrowed from Suzuki’s e-Let’s scooter. Full specifications for the bike haven't yet been released but the e-Let's motor produces 2.3hp and 11 ft-lb of torque and has a range of 20 miles with a 20mph top speed. The Extrigger has upside-down forks, wavy disc brakes and an aluminium-trellis frame. The seat height is 720mm, the wheelbase 960mm and it weighs just 62kg.

We spoke to Suzuki UK who said the technology was there to let: "The rider receive information from the motorcycle shop or enjoy communicating with friends”.

VLC is also known as Li-Fi and is being touted as the future of Wi-Fi as it has the potential for a longer range and faster transfer speeds.
