MOTORCYCLISTS ARE to be allowed to use Plymouth's bus lanes as part of an 18-month trial aimed at reducing the number of motorcycling related deaths and injuries.

An article in thisisplymouth.co.uk, says the city council and police think the move will reduce motorbikes 'weaving' in and out of traffic, as well as making bikers more visible to other road users.

But on the contrary, the council are now warning bus and taxi drivers, who already use the lanes, to watch out for motorbikes, and cycles, "as they are not as visible as larger vehicles".

The council's road safety team has produced a leaflet containing safe riding tips for bikers, and advice for bus drivers, taxi drivers and cyclists. The leaflet is available to download from the Transport and Streets pages of the council's website and has been distributed to motorcycle clubs and retailers.

Accident statistics, traffic flows and accessibility, from the Plymouth trial, will be monitored before and after the experimental order is in force.
