Motorcycles allowed in London Bus Lanes

THIS just in from the London Evening Standard: Motorcyclists and cyclists will be able to share London bus lanes under plans unveiled by Boris Johnson.

The Mayor has instructed Transport for London to develop plans to allow motorcyclists on the lanes. Mr Johnson said a similar move proved successful in Bristol and wants it copied in the capital. But cyclists claimed that allowing faster motorcycles into bus lanes would put them in danger.

Mr Johnson's decision follows a major three-year trial during which TfL allowed motorcyclists to use the bus lanes on Brixton Road and Finchley Road. TfL's study concluded that during the trial the bus lanes were safer for pedestrians, cyclists, car drivers and motorcyclists, with a 42 per cent fall in collisions.

Brian Coleman, London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden, said he was "delighted" Mr Johnson was proceeding with the plan. He said: "This highlights a key difference between Boris Johnson and the previous Mayor. TfL's report on motorcycles in bus lanes had been due to be released last October.

"But Ken Livingstone decided he did not want motorcyclists to use bus lanes so even though this report showed this change would reduce accidents he buried it. Boris Johnson has read the evidence report and made a decision based on fact rather than irrational prejudice.

"Although there are requirements TfL must meet before the Mayor rubber stamps this change, it is good news for all road-users that the wheels are in motion."

Finally, a politician who delivers on his promises, well done Boris.

ps. Boris, when will you be on 'Have I got news for you' again?

pps. Do you think Boris will read this thread?

Well done Boris

Another pat on the back for Boris.

In Newcastle there are some Bus lanes, and some "No car lanes". No car lanes get buses, bikes, taxi, white van men.....but but lanes only get buses. Another case of confusing the public, then fining them.

Hopefully this will become part of the Minister for Transort's policy, and implement it country wide. After all it would make sense to have the same set of road rules wherever you go. (Bikers using bus lanes, not being fined!)

Well done Boris, those pedal biking morons can start paying tax like the real road users and you might just count for shit.

This news has come sooner than I thought. Positive news indeed for us all. Boris is really on the roll at the moment and I hope he keeps this tread going.

Maybe he can now do something about London cyclists?

Yeah make them pay tax or crush their bikes, oh and make them abide by the road laws, perhaps even bring in a licence .

The thing that concerns me is the amount of oil/diesel in the bus lanes. I only really noticed how bad it was a month or two ago in the pouring rain when using a "bus" lane in London where bikes are already allowed. It was like riding a long a rainbow!

He has to get permission from DfT first and then change the signs.

I hope he gets it but he has said things without thinking before.

I agree, we are a weak nation of wankers, we let the police push us around with their bed partners the government whilst we let migrants and lazy workshy fuckers plunder our welfare system, criminal walk away with nothing more than a slap on the wrist and the politically correct turn common sense into madness.  How much more of this bullshit are we going to take?.  That wall is making me feel cramped.

Dont think voting in the conservatives is going to make it any better.

Oh yeah I forgot your an ex copper.

By the way please point out where I have contradicted my stance on being anti politically correct.

lets hope someone tells the fucking bus drivers before it starts...otherwise someone may just getting it from behind !!!! and not in a good way LOL

I was wondering why the buses were moving so slowly this morning to find a bearded bd-sandled cyclist weaving sporadically across the bus lane cycling at a wildly frantic pace with the bus inches from his rear wheel. Was entertaining in some ways.  Bikes in bus lanes will make a bit of a difference to my commute, but not hugely so.
